Discord age assurance is the process Discord uses to place an account into an age group and decide whether it can enter age-restricted spaces or change certain safety settings. It is broader than a single ID check. Discord may infer an age group from account-level signals, ask for a video selfie, offer an ID scan, or test other methods such as Google Wallet and a credit card check.

The important distinction is age, not identity. Discord says its goal is to learn whether an account belongs to a teen or an adult without connecting a legal identity to that Discord account. The method you actually see can vary by region, account, device, applicable law, and Discord's current product tests.

Current as of August 2, 2026: Discord says broader global expansion is planned for the second half of 2026. Google Wallet, credit card checks, and some Incode flows have been limited tests, so do not assume every option will appear on every account. Always follow the method names and vendor notice shown inside your own Discord app.

Quick answer: what most people need to know#

• Discord says more than 90% of users should not need a manual face scan or ID upload. Its internal system can assign an age group when confidence is high.
• A manual prompt normally appears inside Discord when someone tries to access an age-restricted server or channel, unblur sensitive media, or change a protected safety setting.
• Discord's current toolkit documents a video selfie, government ID scan plus selfie, Google Wallet ID pass, and credit card check. Availability differs.
• Video-selfie facial age estimation is processed on the device under Discord's current vendor requirements. The video is not supposed to leave the device.
• ID images and matching selfies go to the named verification vendor, not to Discord. Discord says they are not permanently stored and are deleted quickly, in most cases immediately after confirmation.
• Google Wallet shares a birthdate with Discord so Discord can derive age; Discord says it does not retain that birthdate.
• A credit card check goes through k-ID and Stripe. Discord says it receives an adult-or-not result, while a small temporary authorization may appear.
• A successful check produces system messages and a direct message from Discord's official profile. The account's result appears under User Settings → My Account → Age Group.
• Discord does not send age-assurance prompts or results by email or text message. Treat an emailed “verification” link as suspicious.

When Discord may ask you to confirm your age#

Discord's help center says the prompt appears in the app when an unconfirmed account tries to use an age-restricted experience. Common triggers include:

• entering a server or channel marked age-restricted;
• unblurring media identified by Discord's sensitive-content filter;
• changing a sensitive-content filter from Blur or Block to Show;
• turning off Message Requests;
• speaking in a Stage channel;
• enabling age-restricted application commands; or
• enabling access to age-restricted servers on iOS.

Regional rules can change the trigger. Discord already describes specific age-assurance requirements for the United Kingdom, Australia, and Brazil. A person in one of those regions may be asked to complete a vendor check in circumstances where another user is not.

For the wider rollout, Discord says it first uses an internal machine-learning system when its confidence is high. Its public descriptions mention account age, whether a payment method is present, the types of servers an account participates in, and general activity patterns. Discord says this model does not read message content, analyze conversations, or inspect the content a user posts.

That does not mean the model is infallible or that every signal has been fully documented. Discord has promised a more detailed technical explanation before broader global expansion. Treat “90%+” as Discord's rollout estimate, not a guarantee that a particular account will avoid a prompt.

What happens if you choose not to verify#

Declining a manual check is not the same as deleting your Discord account. According to Discord's current FAQ, you keep the account, existing servers, friends list, direct messages, and voice chat. Age-restricted content stays unavailable, and certain safety defaults designed for teens cannot be changed.

There is an important exception: if a completed check determines that the account holder is below the minimum age required in their country, Discord says the account can be banned. That situation uses Discord's minimum-age appeal process rather than an ordinary retry alone.

Before proceeding, ask whether you actually need the restricted feature. If you do, compare the methods shown in the in-app prompt and read the displayed vendor notice. Do not send an ID to a server moderator, bot, direct message, website form, or person claiming they can “manually approve” the account.

The four documented age-assurance methods#

The four methods reach related outcomes, but their data flows are different. Two are established in Discord's help flow, while Google Wallet, credit card checking, and some alternate-vendor experiences have been described as tests.

1. Video selfie for on-device facial age estimation#

The video-selfie option estimates an age from a short recording. Discord's current k-ID instructions are:

1. Select Take a selfie on the age-confirmation page.
2. Allow camera access.
3. Follow the framing and movement instructions.
4. Select Done after the capture completes.

Discord says k-ID supplies the age-estimation method but processing occurs entirely on the user's device. The face and video are not transmitted to Discord or the vendor and are deleted immediately. Discord receives an estimated age, not the recording.

Discord has also tested an Incode selfie flow under the same on-device requirement. Because vendor tests can end or change, the vendor named in your prompt matters. Pause if the prompt names an unexpected company or sends you outside the documented flow without explaining why.

This method can be fast and does not require a government document, but estimation can be uncertain. Discord notes that a user may be asked to use another method when facial estimation alone does not provide enough confidence.

2. Government ID scan plus matching selfie#

The ID route confirms age from a government-issued document and uses a selfie to match the person presenting it. Discord's k-ID flow sends the ID and selfie directly to k-ID and its document-verification partner, Veratad. Discord says it never sees the files and receives the resulting age.

The documented steps are:

1. Select ID Scan in Discord.
2. Use a mobile device to scan the displayed QR code when requested.
3. Photograph a supported government-issued ID using the on-screen frame.
4. Take the matching selfie.
5. Review the capture and select Done.

Discord has also tested an Incode version. Its support article says only the date of birth is reviewed for the age decision, the process is automated, and the submitted material is deleted after confirmation.

For a cleaner capture, place the document on a flat, non-reflective surface; use even light; keep every edge inside the frame; and make sure text is in focus. Do not edit, crop, add a filter, or obscure a field unless the official prompt explicitly instructs you to do so. An expired or unsupported document may be rejected even when the photograph is clear.

An ID scan is the highest-data method in the toolkit because the document and selfie leave the device for vendor processing. “Discord does not receive the files” does not mean “no third party processes the files.” Read the vendor name, privacy notice, and deletion description before choosing it.

3. Google Wallet passport ID pass#

Discord has tested a Google Wallet option for people with a passport ID pass. The user selects Google Wallet ID Pass, creates or chooses the pass, and authorizes the requested disclosure.

Discord's own instructions say Google shares the birthdate with Discord, which derives the user's age. Discord says it does not store or retain the birthdate afterward, while the other passport information remains in Google Wallet.

This is more specific than saying Discord receives “only an age group.” The documented flow involves a birthdate disclosure, even though Discord says that value is not retained. Availability also depends on device, region, Google Wallet support, and the account being included in the test.

If the option is missing, that is not an error by itself. Choose another method offered in the prompt rather than following an unofficial guide that promises to reveal a hidden switch.

4. Credit card adult check#

The credit card test confirms that the user owns an eligible credit card. Discord says card details go to k-ID, which passes them to Stripe. Discord does not see the card details and receives confirmation of whether the user is an adult.

Discord warns that:

• the option may not be available to everyone;
• only credit cards are eligible, not debit or prepaid gift cards;
• a temporary authorization under USD $0.50 may appear; and
• if charged, the amount should be refunded within 14 business days.

The card route confirms adulthood through the provider's process; it is not a purchase of Discord access. Never pay a moderator or community member to “unlock” a server, and never paste card details into a bot command or support message.

If a temporary authorization remains beyond the stated window, keep the transaction record, contact the card issuer, and use the support path named in Discord or the vendor's official documentation.

How to start and complete the in-app flow safely#

The safest starting point is the prompt that appears inside the current Discord client. Discord says it does not send age-assurance links or results by email or SMS.

Before you begin:

• update Discord from the official app store or download page;
• confirm the prompt appears inside the app;
• close screen-sharing or streaming software that could expose the process;
• read the method and vendor notice;
• check camera permission and lighting if using a selfie or ID; and
• avoid public Wi-Fi when sending an identity document or payment information.

After choosing a method, follow only the displayed instructions. Do not refresh repeatedly, switch devices mid-capture unless prompted, or submit the same document through several unofficial pages. A legitimate flow should return to Discord and produce system status messages.

When the check finishes, Discord sends a direct message from its official profile confirming the determined age group. Verify that the sender is Discord's official profile. Discord's public guidance says it will not send this result by email or text.

How to see or retry your confirmed age group#

Open User Settings, choose My Account, and find Age Group. A completed account shows its confirmed category. An account that has not completed assurance shows Unconfirmed and can display a Confirm Age action.

If the result says teen and you believe it is incorrect, Discord documents two retry routes:

• return to the Discord system-message conversation and select Retry; or
• go to User Settings → My Account → Age Group and select Retry beside the field.

A failed facial estimate can be retried through the ID option. Check camera focus, document validity, network stability, and current app version before repeating the same capture. Changing methods is often more useful than submitting the same poor image several times.

What to do if Discord bans the account as underage#

An under-minimum-age determination is different from being placed in Discord's teen group. Discord says an account can be banned when the verified age is below the minimum required in that country.

Discord documents this appeal path:

1. Log in to the locked Discord account.
2. Open Active Violations and choose the Minimum Age Requirements violation card.
3. Select Let us know to start the appeal.
4. Choose Scan your ID. Discord says UK users may also see a face-scan option.
5. Follow the current camera instructions, scan the document, and take the matching selfie. Discord's appeal guide specifically says to use good light, remove headwear, and keep glasses on.
6. Select Done to submit the check.

Discord says a successful check is typically processed within seconds. Age Check Complete then appears at the top of Active Violations, and account access should be restored. If the check cannot be completed or the determination remains wrong, use the additional-support link in Discord's locked-account guide.

Do not create public posts containing the document or send copies to Mello Zone. Mello Zone cannot overturn a Discord account action, view Discord's vendor result, or complete the appeal for you.

Privacy: what each party receives#

Privacy claims are easiest to understand by separating the parties involved.

Video selfie: Discord says the facial-age model runs on the device. The video is not transmitted or stored. Discord receives an estimated age.

ID scan: The ID and matching selfie go to the named verification vendor and its documented processing partner. Discord says it does not receive the images, the vendor deletes them after confirmation, and Discord receives the age result.

Google Wallet: Google retains the ID pass. Discord says Google shares the birthdate needed to derive age; Discord does not retain the birthdate after the check.

Credit card: Card data goes to k-ID and Stripe. Discord says it receives an adult-or-not result and does not receive the card details.

Age inference: Discord uses account-level signals when confidence is high and says message content is excluded. Discord has promised more methodology and privacy documentation before the full rollout.

No verification system should be described as risk-free. Vendor security, device security, account access, phishing, local law, and future product changes all matter. Discord's stated safeguards are meaningful, but readers should still review the current prompt and official documentation at the moment they verify.

Discord's 2026 rollout timeline#

Discord originally described a broader global rollout for early 2026, then announced that expansion would move to the second half of 2026. The company said it would first add methods, improve vendor transparency, publish technical documentation, add age-assurance data to transparency reports, and create a spoiler-channel option so communities do not have to age-restrict channels merely to discuss spoilers or heavier topics.

Existing legal obligations continue in regions such as the UK, Australia, and Brazil. That means “global rollout delayed” does not mean “no one is currently asked.” It means method availability and requirements can differ while Discord develops the wider system.

Because this is an active rollout, the official Discord help center should outrank a dated screenshot or third-party tutorial. This article records what Discord published as of August 2, 2026 and links the primary pages in the Sources section below.

What this means for Mello Zone members#

Mello Zone is an 18+ SFW community, but Discord's account-level age assurance and Mello Zone's community eligibility are separate decisions. A Discord adult result does not waive Mello Zone rules, consent expectations, or onboarding requirements. Conversely, a Mello Zone volunteer cannot change the age group on a Discord account.

The public Mello Zone website does not request identity documents. Never upload an ID through a general Mello Zone form or send one to a moderator by direct message. If Discord requests a check, complete it only through Discord's in-product flow and the named vendor.

Final checklist#

Before submitting anything, confirm all of the following:

• The prompt started inside Discord, not in an email, SMS, server post, or unsolicited DM.
• You understand which method and vendor are being offered.
• You know whether an image, document, birthdate, or card detail leaves the device.
• You are comfortable with the current vendor notice and regional requirements.
• Camera captures are clear and the document is current when using ID scan.
• You will look for the official Discord DM and verify the result under My Account.
• You know where Retry appears if the result is wrong.
• You will use Discord's minimum-age appeal—not a community moderator—if an incorrect underage result bans the account.

The best method is not automatically the one with the most documentation. It is the available method whose data flow you understand and are comfortable using for the feature you actually need.
