Overview

What CTL is designed to do

Crisis Text Line is designed for people who would rather type than speak. A trained volunteer counselor listens, asks questions, helps lower the intensity of the moment, and works with the texter toward a safer and calmer next step. Counselors are not medical professionals and do not provide diagnosis or treatment.

Important distinction

This page is an independent Mello Zone orientation profile. It does not mean Mello Zone operates, supervises, endorses, or guarantees this organization. The provider remains responsible for its own service, eligibility, staffing, privacy practices, availability, and outcomes.

Contact methods

Choose the channel that feels most usable right now.

Phone, text, chat, email, locator, and website options can serve different needs. Availability notes are shown on every card.

Common reasons someone may choose this resource.

  • Anxiety, panic, depression, grief, loneliness, or feeling overwhelmed
  • Suicidal thoughts or self-harm urges
  • Bullying, relationship conflict, identity concerns, or school and work stress
  • A moment when speaking aloud does not feel private or manageable

  3. 03

Questions intended to understand safety and what support would feel useful

Empathetic listening without judgment or pressure

  5. 05

A conversation that often lasts about 15 to 45 minutes, depending on need and volume

Limits and fit

Knowing what a resource cannot do is part of making it useful.

  • Volunteer Crisis Counselors are not doctors or therapists and do not provide medical advice.
  • Response time can vary when demand is high.
  • The service is designed for crisis de-escalation, not ongoing counseling with the same person.

History

How this resource became part of the support landscape.

  1. 2013

    Milestone 01

    A text-first crisis service launched

Crisis Text Line began in the United States with the goal of making emotional support reachable through a communication method many people already used privately.

  2. Growth

    Milestone 02

    The volunteer model expanded internationally

Affiliated services developed in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland while the U.S. service added web chat and WhatsApp access.

  3. Today

    Milestone 03

    Conversation data informs crisis research

The organization studies anonymized patterns to improve quality, understand emerging needs, and show where people are reaching out during community-wide stress.

Impact in practice

Wildfire conversations rose when a community was under pressure

During the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, Crisis Text Line reported that conversations from LA County doubled at the onset compared with the prior week, while California volume rose by more than 40 percent. The example shows why a text channel can matter when disaster, displacement, and uncertainty make normal support harder to reach.

Privacy and device safety

Support can be private without every device being invisible.

  • Crisis Text Line describes the service as free and confidential.
  • Texting creates records on a phone and potentially with a carrier. Use web chat if that feels safer for your situation.
  • Review the organization's digital-rights and privacy information if data handling is a major concern.
