Overview

What 988 Lifeline is designed to do

Important distinction

This page is an independent Mello Zone orientation profile. It does not mean Mello Zone operates, supervises, endorses, or guarantees this organization. The provider remains responsible for its own service, eligibility, staffing, privacy practices, availability, and outcomes.

Phone, text, chat, email, locator, and website options can serve different needs. Availability notes are shown on every card.

What it can help with

Common reasons someone may choose this resource.

  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm
  • Emotional distress, panic, grief, or feeling overwhelmed
  • Loneliness, relationship strain, identity concerns, or substance-use distress
  • Concern about a friend or loved one
  • Finding local crisis and follow-up resources

What to expect

A first contact should not feel like stepping through fog.

  1. 01

A short greeting or routing message before a counselor answers

  2. 02

A trained counselor who listens, asks about immediate safety, and helps identify next steps

  3. 03

Judgment-free support without requiring a formal diagnosis

  4. 04

Local referrals when useful and available

  5. 05

The option to share as much or as little as you can manage in the moment

Limits and fit

Knowing what a resource cannot do is part of making it useful.

  • 988 is crisis support, not ongoing psychotherapy or psychiatric treatment.
  • Wait times and local routing can vary by call volume and location.
  • If someone is in immediate physical danger, local emergency services may be the faster path.

Impact in practice

Independent evaluation found measurable relief after calls

The official Lifeline history reports that independent evaluations found callers felt less suicidal, less depressed, less overwhelmed, and more hopeful after speaking with a Lifeline counselor. The value is not that every problem is solved in one contact, but that a difficult moment can become more survivable and connected to a next step.

Privacy and device safety

Support can be private without every device being invisible.

  • The Lifeline describes call, text, and chat conversations as free and confidential.
  • Counselors may ask about safety so they can understand the urgency of the situation.
  • Safety and emergency-response practices can depend on what is shared and the circumstances. Ask the counselor directly if you are worried about what may happen next.
